I was originally trained as a sculptor, but I have never thought of Art in terms that limit the scope of what an artist decides to use as a medium.
To me, an artist has a need to express an idea, or a concern, and the medium is merely a vessel for that idea, and the idea should never be subservient to the medium. If one’s art gets to that point, it is best to back off and ask oneself whether one is merely turning out product, or really expanding and exploring new ideas and ways of expression. In fact, to me my art is the idea and not the object.
That said, I do revel in material creation and, as you can see from my portfolio, I take great joy in working in all kinds of media. Now that I think about it, I probably haven’t done enough!
